Species range
In Utah this species occurs, so far as is known, only in Rich County and in Daggett County (see Thaeler 1972).
Habitat
Jensen (1965), discussing this species as Thomomys talpoides pygmaeus as it was known at the time, stated: "These small, pale gophers are usually found in shallow, rocky soils within the study area [Rich County, Utah]. The specimen from near Little Creek Reservoir on the west side of the Bear river, however, was taken in deep soil near a stream." Thaeler (1972), in the publication in which he elevated idahoensis (including the race pygmaeus) back to specific status, summarized known Utah localities and presented elevations for three of these, which ranged from 8,000 to 9,000 ft.
Threats or limiting factors
Threats to this species in Utah are unknown. In general, pocket gophers are considered pests and are widely persecuted, and such persecution or "control" may be a threat to this species in Utah.
