Reported for UT in FNA 1993. Stone (1998) cites records from Garfield Co. Windham has questioned whether this is a good taxon or just an odd growth form. If recognized, disjunct in UT on Aquarius Plateau and Duchesne Co. (Utah Rare Plant Society Master List).

The main threats to this species are from grazing, climate change, and potential human impacts. Several occurrences are in an grazing allotments. Several occurrences are on or near an established hiking trail where it may be impacted by trampling. Ongoing drought in Utah may also be impacting this species.
