Species range
As a breeding species in Utah, this tanager occurs "in streamside cottonwoods and willows at Beaver Dam Wash and in the Virgin River Valley in Washington County" (Hayward et al. 1976). It has also been seen near Parowan, Iron County (Murie 1963), and there is even "an extralimital observation from Eureka [northeastern Juab County]" (Behle and Perry 1975).
Habitat
Hayward et al. (1976) mentioned that this species is "a breeder in streamside cottonwoods and willows at Beaver Dam Wash and in the Virgin River Valley in Washington County." Behle et al. (1985) wrote that this species is found in Utah "in willows and cottonwoods of valley floors in the Virgin River Valley and its tributaries". Wauer (1997) reported a Utah nest of this species that was found in a pecan tree and said that the species "has nested annually in teh riparian woodland along the Virgin River . . .."
Threats or limiting factors
Threats to this species in Utah are not known. Robinson (1996) indicated that there are few threats to this species but commented: "Probably largest effect of human activity is through habitat destruction."
