AUF (Welsh et al 2015): This is one of the rarest and most unusual plant species in Utah. Most of the sites discovered for this plant have been drowned by the rising water of Lake Powell. The few surviving relics are perched just above the high water mark of the lake. Whether any persisted when the lake rose above 3700 feet in 1990, or whether they will persist beyond the interval that the reservoir serves as a lake is unknown. The plants should be monitored occasionally to determine their status. Leaves at the base of a accumulation of marcescent remains of this plant in Driftwood Canyon along Lake Powell were dated at 440 years B.P.
