Species range
Estimate from download of data from Utah Rare Plant Database on February, 14th 2025.
Geocat 57 observations: Extent of Occurrence: 158,407.304 km2.
Historic observations over 40 years old were not used.
Moist sites in meadows, seeps (sometimes markedly saline), and springs with sedges, rushes, and other mesophytic species, at 1370 to 3355 m in all Utah counties (except perhaps Grand and San Juan); Alaska and Yukon, south to Mexico, and disjunct in the eastern U.S. (Welsh et al. 2015).
Threats or limiting factors
The main threats are from habitat degradation due to grazing, recreation, invasive plants, fire, drought, and road maintenance.
Threats compiled using observations and notes from Utah Rare Plant Database and Utah Geospatial Resource Center GIS Data downloaded in 2024. Severity of impacts are not well known so ranges are provided where appropriate.
Many occurrences are within grazing allotments where livestock may trample plants and alter wetland habitats while accessing water. Occurrences within UREZ phase 1 zone areas may be impacted in the future by solar and/or wind development. One occurrence has been impacted by fire. Drought and climate change is also a threat and likely impacting this species through out it's range (Wrobleski, 2023). Invasive plants and herbicide control can impact some occurrences. Occurrences near trail, roads and utility lines may be impacted by maintenance. Recreational use of habitat, such as visiting hotsprings, foot traffic and OHV related activities, may pose a threat to some populations throughout its range. As the human population grows in areas within easy access to habitat and as recreational use increases, the impacts may become substantially more significant.
