Tell us about yourself: Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

My name is Lokelani Ferre. I have spent the majority of my life in Utah County in various cities. I currently reside in American Fork. I worked in the healthcare field for over 15 years, and I enjoyed my time helping people and working with my patients to improve their health. I left my career to raise my four beautiful children and also help run our family farm.

Why do you hunt, and how did you get into it?

My husband introduced me into the world of hunting and took me on my first deer hunt 11 years ago. We went on a week-long hunt during the deer rifle season. We hunted hard for seven days, and on the last day of our hunt, I was able to harvest a beautiful deer. I couldn't believe the overwhelming feelings and emotions that came from that experience. It is a memory that I will cherish forever. I'm grateful each time we harvest a deer, as it puts meat in our freezer.

What is your favorite part of hunting?

My favorite part about hunting is being outdoors and exploring new areas. I love that this is a passion for my whole family now and that we get to enjoy it together. My kids have joined us in the field the last few years, and it's been an amazing experience teaching them about hunting. Memories are always being made, and it's always a wonderful time, whether we harvest an animal or not.

What are some tips you would offer someone who is interested in learning to hunt?

Despite what is portrayed on social media at times, you don't need fancy, expensive equipment to hunt. Put in the time to learn, practice shooting at the range and build your confidence and skills. It will pay off when the time comes. I have learned a lot through trial and error over the years of what not to do while hunting. There are many podcasts and hunting videos that are great resources and will save you from making the mistakes I have experienced. Don't give up and have patience.
