The hunt will be held Nov. 10 at the Pahvant Wildlife Management Area near Holden. There's no cost to participate.

To participate, you must be 15 years of age or younger on Nov. 10 and a graduate of Utah's Hunter Education program.

The hunt is limited to the first 100 youth who call the Division of Wildlife Resources office in Cedar City. The office number is 435-865-6100.

"This hunt will give kids a chance to get outside and experience what it's like to take an upland game bird," says Teresa Griffin, regional wildlife manager for the DWR.

The Nov. 10 hunt is split into two sessions: a morning session and an afternoon session.

The morning hunt starts at 8 a.m. and ends at noon. The afternoon hunt begins at 1 p.m. and continues until the end of legal shooting hours (5:13 p.m.).

Each youth who participates can take up to two birds.

At the beginning of each session, DWR Wildlife Biologist Lynn Zubeck will meet briefly with the young hunters. During the meeting, Zubeck will discuss pheasants, habitat, hunting ethics and — most importantly — safety in the field.

After the meeting, youth will be free to hunt for birds anywhere within the 890-acre WMA.

"Zubeck will release 250 pheasants before the hunt," Griffin says, "so there's a good chance all of the kids will harvest a bird."

The DWR and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife have teamed up to provide young hunters with this special opportunity.
