Online application makes it easy to apply for a permit
Every year, trappers apply for permits to trap muskrat, beaver and other furbearers on Utah's Waterfowl Management Areas (WMAs). You may only trap on a state WMA if you have the necessary permit.
For detailed information about the application process, read rule R657-11-27: Applications for Trapping on State Waterfowl Management Areas.
Important dates. You must submit your application by Oct. 9, 2014. Drawing results will be available on Oct. 16, 2014. For assistance applying online, call 801-538-4700 before 5 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2014.
Group applications. Up to three trappers may apply as a group for a single permit. None of the group applicants may apply for any other area. To add a second or third hunter, click on the link below to expand the application.
Contact superintendents for more information.
If you obtain a permit, you must trap under the supervision of the WMA superintendent. The superintendent determines trapping dates, areas and the species you may trap. To learn more about the areas open to trapping, trapping fees and the number of permits for individual areas, contact a Division office or a WMA superintendent during the application period. (Download a list of Waterfowl Management Areas—including contact information.)
Fees. Although there isn't an application fee, there is a permit fee if you are successful in obtaining a permit. Before trapping on the designated waterfowl management area, the successful applicant (or applicants) must pay the associated permit fee to the Salt Lake Division office by Nov. 4, 2014. Permits are not valid until they have been signed by the superintendent in charge of the area to be trapped. For more information, read Utah Admin. Rule R657-11-28
If the Division receives more applications than the number of permits available, there will be a drawing to determine successful applicants and alternates. Applicants will be notified by mail or e-mail of any drawing results.
Responsibility of trappers. All trappers are directly responsible to the WMA superintendent. If you violate management or trapping rules, you may lose current and future trapping privileges on all WMAs. For more information, read Utah Admin. Rule R657-11-31.
Vehicle travel. Vehicle travel on WMAs is restricted to developed roads. Written permission for other travel may be obtained from the WMA superintendent. For more information, read Utah Admin. Rule R657-11-29.
Trapping hours. On WMAs, you may only check traps from 30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset. For more information, read Utah Admin. Rule R657-11-30.
For more information, see page 23 of the 2014–2015 Furbearer Guidebook.
