Youth upland game hunt

These hunts are open to all youth who meet the age requirements and who either graduate from Hunter Education or who participate in Utah's Trial Hunting Program. You can read more about these hunts on page 12 of the Utah Upland Game & Turkey Guidebook.

The Division releases chukar partridge and pheasant for the youth hunts. You can see the specific release locations on the chukar release map and the pheasant release map.

Besides those listed in the guidebook, there may be additional hunts offered in areas across the state. Once they are scheduled, those opportunities will be listed below. (See information about the upcoming youth pheasant hunts.)

Youth hunters are also permitted to hunt all regular seasons open to adults.

Southeastern Utah

Hatt's Ranch Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has partnered with Hatt's Ranch to provide guided youth pheasant hunting opportunities during the statewide youth pheasant hunt (Oct. 14, 2017). Hunting dogs will be provided for 20 qualifying youth hunters. (Please see the 2017-18 Utah Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook for bag and possession limits.)

Location: Hatt's Ranch, which is located 3.5 miles south of Interstate 70 along SR-24 (heading toward Hanksville).

Date: Oct. 14, 2017

Time: 9 a.m.

Requirements: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2017. The hunt is limited to 20 participants. Participants must have an adult accompany them, possess an upland game hunting license and have passed Hunter Education.

How to sign up: You can sign up beginning Sept. 28, 2017. To sign up, visit or call the DWR office in Price at 435-613-3700. Successful applicants will be randomly drawn and notified approximately five days before the hunt.

Desert Lake WMA Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will host a youth pheasant hunt at the Desert Lake WMA near Elmo, Utah during the statewide youth pheasant hunt (Oct. 14, 2017). Hunting dogs will be provided for 20 qualifying youth hunters. (Please see the 2017-18 Utah Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook for bag and possession limits.)

Location: The Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area (WMA) near Elmo, Utah. To get to the Desert Lake WMA, simply take SR-155 off of SR-10 north of the town of Huntington. Then, take SR-155 to the town of Elmo. Once you get to Elmo, continue east on Main Street. Less than 0.5 mile east of town, there will be a sign designating the Desert Lake WMA. Turn south on this road and go for 1.5 miles to a kiosk on the right-hand side of the road.

Southwestern Utah

Pahvant Upland Game Management Area

Location: Pahvant Upland Game Management Area in Millard County.

Date: November 11, 2017.

Time: There will be two sessions. The morning session is at 8 a.m., and the afternoon session is at 1 p.m.

Requirements: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2017 or have graduated from Hunter Education in 2017 prior to November 11, 2017. The hunt is limited to 100 participants (50 per session).

How to sign up: You can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis. To sign up, call the Cedar City office at 435-865-6100.

Annabella Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: Annabella Game Management Area in Sevier County.

Date: November 11, 2017.

Time: There will be two sessions. The morning session is at 8 a.m., and the afternoon session is at 1 p.m.

Requirements: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 60 participants (30 per session). Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) is providing the birds, so young hunters will have a great chance to harvest pheasant. (To support new youth hunters, we're asking hunters to hunt the Richfield or Redmond WMAs instead instead of the Annabella WMA until at least 5:00 p.m. on November 11.) Please bring only well-trained dogs to the event, or keep inexperienced dogs on a leash.

What to bring: Please bring a camping chair for lunch, a shotgun, ear plugs, and extra shotgun shells for clay pigeon shooting.

Sponsored Youth Pheasant Hunts

Meeting locations: Beaver High School, Parowan High School, New Harmony Church and the Cedar City CAL Ranch store.

Date: November 4, 2017.

Time: There will be two sessions. The morning session is from 8 a.m.–12 p.m., and the afternoon session is from 1–4 p.m. The New Harmony morning session will begin at 9 a.m.

Requirements: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2017. The hunts are limited to the amount of hunters that can register. Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) is providing the birds, so young hunters will have a great chance to harvest pheasant. (To support new youth hunters, we ask hunters to refrain from hunting in the areas listed above until at least 5:00 p.m. on November 4.) Please bring only well-trained dogs to the event, or keep inexperienced dogs on a leash.

What to bring: Camp chairs, a shotgun, shotgun shells and ear plugs. Please bring only well-trained dogs to the event, or keep inexperienced dogs on a leash.

Schedule: The morning will begin with a brief safety and ethics presentation. After the hunt, participants will fill out a short survey and enjoy snacks provided by SFW.
