Youth upland game hunt

These hunts are open to all youth who meet the age requirements and who either graduate from Hunter Education or who participate in Utah's Trial Hunting Program. You can read more about these hunts on page 13 of the Utah Upland Game & Turkey Guidebook.

Besides those listed in the guidebook, there may be additional hunts offered in areas across the state. Once they are scheduled, those opportunities will be listed below. (See information about the upcoming youth pheasant hunts.)

Youth hunters are also permitted to hunt all regular seasons open to adults.

Southeastern Utah

Desert Lake Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will host a Youth Pheasant Hunt at the Desert Lake WMA near Elmo during the statewide youth pheasant hunt. Hunting dogs will be provided for 20 qualifying youth hunters. Those 20 hunters will be randomly drawn from a pool of applicants and notified approximately five days before the hunt. Please see the 2018-19 Utah Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook for bag and possession limits. Steel shot is required at Desert Lake WMA.

Where: The Youth Pheasant Hunt will take place at the Desert Lake WMA near Elmo, Utah. To get to the Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area, take SR-155 off of SR-10 north of the town of Huntington, take SR-155 to the town of Elmo, once you get to Elmo continue east on Main Street, less than 0.5 mile east of town there will be a sign designating the Desert Lake WMA, turn south on this road and go for 1.5 miles to a kiosk on the right hand side of the road.

When: The pheasant hunt will start at 11 a.m. on October 13, 2018.

Who: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2018. The hunt is limited to 20 participants, who will be randomly drawn from a pool of applicants and notified approximately five days before the hunt. Participants must have an adult accompany them and possess a valid Utah Hunting or Combination license.

Hatt's Ranch Youth Pheasant Hunt

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has partnered with Hatt's Ranch to provide a guided youth pheasant hunt during the statewide youth pheasant hunt. Hunting dogs will be provided for 15 qualifying youth hunters. Those 15 hunters will be randomly drawn from a pool of applicants and notified approximately five days before the hunt. Please see the 2018-19 Utah Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook for bag and possession limits.

Where: This youth pheasant hunt will take place at Hatt's Ranch. To get to Hatt's Ranch, travel south along SR-24 from Interstate 70 for about 5.5 miles until you come to the south entrance to the ranch to the west. Turn onto Hatt's Ranch Road and head north for about 1.7 miles until you come to the houses.

When: The pheasant hunt will start at 9 a.m. on October 27, 2018.

Who: To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2018. The hunt is limited to 15 participants, who will be randomly drawn from a pool of applicants and notified approximately five days before the hunt. Participants must have an adult accompany them and possess a valid Utah Hunting or Combination license.

Southwestern Utah

Annabella Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: Annabella Game Management Area in Sevier County.

Date: Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Requirements: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) are offering a free youth pheasant hunt in Annabella, Utah at the Wildlife Management Area. To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 50 participants (25 per session). SFW will provide the birds, so young hunters have an increased opportunity for harvesting pheasants. You will need your hunter education completed or a trial hunting program number, as well as a valid hunting or combination license. Please wear at minimum a hunter orange hat to address safety concerns. All participants must agree to the waiver form provided; this includes adults attending to supervise youth or observers/helpers staying at the event to provide transportation and youth who will be hunting. No one will be permitted to the event unless they have agreed to the online waiver. Note: Do not bring dogs that are not well trained for upland game hunting. If dogs create an unsafe or poor hunting environment, they must be restrained or removed from the location.

What to expect: Please arrive thirty minutes before your scheduled hunt, so you can obtain your free tickets for drawing prizes, practice clay pigeon shooting before the hunt, and listen to the safety briefing. Free lunch will be provided at noon for both sessions, so please bring a camp chair if you prefer, earplugs and extra shotgun shells for target practice, and hunter orange for the shooter and anyone accompanying the shooter in the field. The supervising adult will be emailed a survey within the week after your hunt occurs; please check your emails the week following the hunt to provide feedback.

Beaver Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: On private property, near Beaver, Utah.

Date: Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Requirements: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) are offering a free youth pheasant hunt near Beaver, Utah on private property To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 20 participants (10 per session). SFW will provide the birds, so young hunters have an increased opportunity for harvesting pheasants. You will need your hunter education completed or a trial hunting program number, as well as a valid hunting or combination license. Anyone gonig afield should wear at minimum a hunter orange hat to address safety concerns. All participants must agree to the waiver form provided; this includes adults attending to supervise youth or observers/helpers staying at the event to provide transportation and youth who will be hunting. No one will be permitted to the event unless they have agreed to the online waiver. Note: Do not bring dogs that are not well trained for upland game hunting. If dogs create an unsafe or poor hunting environment, they must be restrained or removed from the location.

Cedar City Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: On private property, near Cedar City, Utah.

Date: Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 40 participants (20 per session). SFW will provide the birds, so young hunters have an increased opportunity for harvesting pheasants. You will need your hunter education completed or a trial hunting program number, as well as a valid hunting or combination license. Anyone going afield should wear at minimum a hunter orange hat to address safety concerns. All participants must agree to the waiver form provided; this includes adults attending to supervise youth or observers/helpers staying at the event to provide transportation and youth who will be hunting. No one will be permitted to the event unless they have agreed to the online waiver. Note: Do not bring dogs that are not well trained for upland game hunting. New Harmony Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: On private property, near New Harmony, Utah.

Date: Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Requirements: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) are offering a free youth pheasant hunt near New Harmony, Utah on private property. To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 20 participants (10 per session). SFW will provide the birds, so young hunters have an increased opportunity for harvesting pheasants. You will need your hunter education completed or a trial hunting program number, as well as a valid hunting or combination license. Anyone going afield should wear at minimum a hunter orange hat to address safety concerns. All participants must agree to the waiver form provided; this includes adults attending to supervise youth or observers/helpers staying at the event to provide transportation and youth who will be hunting. Pahvant Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: Pahvant Wildlife Management Area.

Date: Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

Requirements: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) are offering a free youth pheasant hunt near Fillmore, Utah at the Pahvant Wildlife Management Area. To participate, you must be a new hunter, or you must be 17 years of age or younger on July 31, 2017 and have graduated from Hunter Education prior to November 10, 2018, or possess a Trial Hunting Program number. The hunt is limited to 100 participants (50 per session). All participants must have completed hunter education or possess a trial hunting program number and a valid hunting or combination license. Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) is providing the birds, so young hunters have an increased opportunity for success in harvesting pheasants. Please wear at minimum a hunter orange hat to address safety concerns. All participants must agree to the waiver form provided; this includes adults attending to supervise youth or observers/helpers staying at the event to provide transportation and youth who will be hunting. No one will be permitted to the event unless they have agreed to the online waiver. Note: Do not bring dogs that are not well trained for upland game hunting. Parowan Youth Pheasant Hunt

Location: On private property, near Parowan, Utah.

Date: Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

To participate, you must be 17 years of age or younger. The hunt is limited to 20 participants (10 per session).
