To speak with Hardware Ranch's education coordinator, Nicaela Haig, please email nhaig@utah.gov (preferred). Between December and February, you may also call 435-753-6206 to reach her.

We look forward to seeing you.

Thank you,

Program information

Our winter school programs are based around the 4th grade curriculum, but may be adapted to suit any grade level.

Hardware ranch adventures

Mondays and Fridays in January and February
1.5 to 2 hours long
Reservations required

  • Welcome to the mountains! Learn about Hardware Ranch, the elk that winter here, and other wildlife that can be found in northern Utah. Students will enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh or wagon ride through a herd of wild Rocky Mountain elk (number depending on weather), explore the visitor center before it opens to the public, and play wildlife games.

Programs begin between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. and are offered before we open to the general public. Availability depends on class size and staffing. The entire group will meet together for an introduction to Hardware Ranch. The student group is then split and rotated between three or four educational activities. Each rotation lasts approximately one half hour. Programs last approximately two hours.

We require reservations for school programs. Please contact Nicaela Haig (nhaig@utah.gov) for more information or to set a date for your group. Reservations fill up quickly once winter arrives!

School group policies

Provided that your group meets the following criteria, a special student rate is available. This rate reduces the cost of ride tickets to $1 per student. Every 1 adult per 10 students in a school group also qualifies for the $1 rate. For example, if a group has 60 students and 2 adults, the total cost would be only $62.

Necessary criteria for the $1 student rate:

  • Reservations are required and students must be enrolled in a public school or homeschooling group.
  • Due to our curriculum goals, students must be school age K–12 or a student of a university. We do not accept younger siblings during school programs.
  • School programs take place during regular school hours, during the regular school year.
  • School programs are offered to groups with a minimum size of 20 and maximum of 75. Larger groups may be accommodated on an individual basis depending on our staff availability. Smaller groups may be put on a waiting list and join with another group to meet the required 20.
  • We accept one adult for every 10 students at the discounted rate. Any adults over will be charged full ride price and are discouraged. Too many adults decrease the number of students we can put on the ride and therefore increase the number of rides needed. Due to our small staff, we cannot handle additional rides.
  • We encourage you to have a minimum of one adult for each "group" of kids; we usually split students into three or four groups depending on the age and size of the whole group.

If you are unable to meet the above criteria you are still welcome to visit Hardware Ranch during our regular public hours and enjoy the ride for regular ride price. If staff is available, we may be able to do one 30-minute activity with your group.
