Aquilegia holmengrii or Noel’s columbine is a recently described species (2008) that was once included in A. elegantula. This columbine is named in honor of Dr. N. H. Holmgren who helped in the taxonomic revision of this species. A. holmengrii is endemic to the Navajo Basin and is located in moist sites primarily within Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. 

Description

Aquilegia holmgrenii or Noel’s columbine is a glabroussmooth, hairless to sparingly glandularcovered with glands; with secretion-producing tissue-puberlent herb reaching 1.5-2.7 dm tall. Leaves are mainly basalat or near the base and biternatecompound leaf structure in which the primary division is ternatearranged in a whorla set of plant parts arranged in a circle around a central axis or cluster of three (three parts), each of those divisions is again ternatearranged in a whorla set of plant parts arranged in a circle around a central axis or cluster of three, resulting in 9 leaflets, reaching 4-25(30) cm long. Leaves on 1.5-9 cm long petiolesleaf stalks, connecting leaf to stem while leaflets are on 1.2-3 cm
