Opportunity for youth to hunt waterfowl with officers

During last year's mentored youth hunt, Ben Koeber harvested a banded Canada goose.

A special youth-only mentored waterfowl hunt will be conducted by the Utah Waterfowl Association and the Utah Conservation Officers Association on Sept. 21, 2013, the same day Utah's Youth Waterfowl Hunt is held.

Mentoring guides will take new hunters to the marsh to experience waterfowl hunting and give instruction. Most of the hunts will be conducted at multiple locations in Davis, Weber and Box Elder counties.

All applicants will be entered into a random drawing and will be contacted if their names are drawn. The following rules apply:

  • Participants must be at least 12 years old and no older than 15 on Sept. 21, 2013.
  • Participants must provide their own ammunition, shotgun, waders, hunting license and basic personal hunting gear on the day of the hunt. A mentoring guide, decoys and other pertinent gear will be provided.
  • Participants must bring a parent or legal guardian to accompany them on the hunt.
  • All participants will be required to sign a liability waiver.
  • A post-hunt lunch will be served at the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area Learning Center from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. (Lunch will be provided by Camp Chef and WidowMaker Boats.)

If you are interested in participating in this hunt — as either a youth hunter or an adult mentor — contact Utah Waterfowl Association member Troy Thompson at 801-698-6467 or DWR Conservation Officer Wyatt Bubak at 801-786-9999. The application deadline is Sept. 7, 2013.
