Apply for a bear hunting permit

If you want to hunt or pursue black bears in Utah this year, you need to submit an application no later than March 2. You can apply for a bear hunting or a bear pursuit permit online. To be included in the draw for permits, your application must be received through the website no later than 11 p.m. on March 2.

Watch the sky turn white

It's a sight you have to see to believe: thousands of white snow and Ross' geese lifting off Gunnison Bend Reservoir amid honks and the beating of wings. You can see this spectacle yourself on Feb. 27 and 28 at the annual Delta Snow Goose Festival. The festival will be held at and near Gunnison Bend Reservoir, just west of Delta. Admission is free.

Fishing is heating up near the shore

If you like to catch trout and other coldwater fish from the shore, pay attention to Utah's fishing reports — some of the best shore fishing of the year is about to begin. The ice has melted at most of the mid-elevation waters in Utah. In the next week or two, additional mid-elevation waters will also experience "ice off."

Hardware Ranch to close Feb. 9

Feb. 9, is the last day you can take a horse-drawn wagon ride through the middle of a herd of wild elk at Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area. Muddy conditions and fewer elk are forcing managers to end the wagon rides early this year.

Start of light goose hunt moved back

If you plan on hunting light geese in Millard County this winter, you'll need to tweak your schedule a bit. The hunt will not start on Feb. 28, as originally scheduled. Instead, it will start on March 2.

It might be the middle of winter, but it's already time to start applying for a permit to hunt big game animals in Utah this fall. Applications are being accepted now. We must receive your application no later than 11 p.m. on March 5, to be included in the permit drawings.

Course required to gather shed antlers

You must complete the online Antler Gathering Ethics course if you want to gather shed antlers in Utah between Feb. 1 and April 15. Gathering antlers that drop off the heads of deer, elk and moose is an activity that's grown in popularity across the country, including in Utah. The challenge with shed-antler gathering is that it happens during the worst time of the year for the animals and the habitat the animals rely on in the winter.
