Harvest Information Program (HIP)

The Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP) is a method the Utah Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) use to generate more reliable estimates of hunting activity, as well as of the numbers of migratory birds harvested throughout the country.

These estimates give biologists the information they need to make sound decisions concerning hunting seasons, bag limits and species management.

Migratory waterfowl includes American crow, ducks, geese, rails, snipe, coot, doves, band-tailed pigeon, sandhill crane, swan. If you intend to hunt any of these species you must have a current Harvest Information Program (HIP) number from each state you hunt migratory birds.

Your HIP registration is good for one year and must be obtained annually. A Utah HIP registration is valid from March 11, XXXX through March 10, YYYY.

If you are experiencing problems registering for a HIP number, please call 801-538-4700 from Mon.-Fri. 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
