Old business
Chukar Management Plan
Dean is still working on the Chukar Management plan, but he has not had much time to work on it due to other projects with higher priorities. He may have a draft ready to present at the next meeting.
Walk-in access
The walk-in access plan has been on hold for the last couple of months, but it is back on track now. Hopefully, the final recommendation will be presented to the division hierarchy within the next month. The goal is to have this program in place for the 2003 hunting season.
Dean is concerned about how the funding for the program will be resolved and asked if we felt that it would be acceptable to divert habitat funds towards a pilot program for walk-in access. The committee felt that we would need to have a better idea of what type of trade-offs would be involved. This is a potential topic for the next meeting.
Youth pheasant hunts
All of the youth pheasant hunts are full, except for the Huntington WMA which has 39 openings and the Pahvant WMA which has 8 openings. If you know of a youth who would like to participate in these hunts, please have them fax their application to Arlo Wing at (801) 538-4709.
The committee reaffirmed their belief that getting the word out about these hunts in Hunter's Ed is vital to filling them.
Upland game winter feeding program
The proposal for this program will go before the RACs starting on December 2nd. The committee provided some feedback on the wording of the proposal, but was satisfied with the content.
Sagebrush steppe habitat projects
John Staley and Ernie Perkins met with the Northern Region habitat people and presented 3 ideas for "landscape" scale habitat projects. During the course of the meeting, 2 more ideas were proposed. Another meeting will be scheduled to determine the level of interest in these projects and determine how to proceed.
New business
Topo maps on the Internet
Ernie Perkins pointed out an Internet site, www.topozone.com, which allows you to print out topo maps for the entire United States with scales from 1:24,000 to 1:100,000.
Upland game survey
A brainstorming session about questions to include on the forthcoming upland game survey was held. A wide variety of topics were covered, and Dean is going to forward the list to the person who is actually creating the survey.
