Evaporation ponds from the Great Salt Lake

Potash, or sulphate of potassium (SOP), is one of the most commonly used commercial fertilizers in the world. The ease of producing potash from the Great Salt Lake allowed the United States to maintain adequate supplies for commercial food production during World War II when its previous supply from Germany was cut off.

The Great Salt Lake is now the largest solar producer of potash and potassium in the world! While salt harvesting produces the highest volume of minerals extracted from the lake, potash is far and away the most lucrative due to its high worldwide demand.
