DescriptionCrab Creek Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU)is just west of Thistle in central Utah. Although not the boundary, Highway 6 is close to the boundary on the northeast side, and for about a mile in the southeast Highway 89 does form part of the bounday. Higher elevation occur in the west of the unit, in the south about 8400 feet and in the north 6600 feet. From these higher elevations the unit slopes to the east and almost to Thistle Creek at about 5600 feet. Shurtz Canyon (7600 - 5200 feet) drains the unit in the north and Crab Creek (7200 - 5600 feet) in the south. Elevations on the CWMU range between 4900 and 8700 feet a difference of about 3800 feet. The most common elevation is around 6000 feet.
On the Grab Creek Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) sixty-two (62%) is covered by Rocky Mountain Gambel Oak-Mixed Montane Shrubland (41). Eleven percent (11%) is Inter- Mountain Basins Montane Sagebrush Steppe (62). Rocky Mountain Aspen Forest and Woodland (22), Rocky Mountain Bigtooth Maple Ravine Woodland (23), Rocky Mountain Montane Mesic Mixed Conifer Forest and Woodland (32), and Colorado Plateau Pinyon-Juniper Woodland (36) make up about sixteen percent (16%) of the land cover and make up the majority of the forest and woodland character of the unit. There is also two percent (2%) of the unit covered with Rocky Mountain Lower Montane Riparian Woodland and Shrubland (79).
One of the Crab Creek Cooperative Wildlife Mangement Unit's (CWMU) nearest weather stations, SPANISH FORK POWER HOUSE (428119), is about 8.1 km northwest from the southeast edge of the CWMU. SPANISH FORK POWER HOUSE has one hundred (100) years of records, 1909 - 2009. During the FALL (September, October and November) the average precipitation is 4.91 inches, but it can be as high as 13.32 inches or as low as 1.11 inch. During the 91-day FALL period, 20 days will experience greater than or equal to 0.01 inch of precipitation, 12 days of greater than or equal to 0.10 inch, or 3 days of the greater than or equal to 0.50 inch of precipitation. There can also be one day of precipitation of 1.0 inch. Snowfall during the FALL averages 6.6 inches but can be as high as 41.5 inches. FALL temperature at SPANISH FORK POWER HOUSE averages 53.1 degrees F. but can be as high as 101.0 degrees F. or as low as -6.0 degrees F. During the FALL, 23 days will be below freezing (32 degrees F.) and 4 days above 90 degrees F. This map is provided for general reference only and does not constitute a legal hunt boundary.
