DescriptionThe Broadmouth Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) starts on the lower slopes of James Peak and above Ogden Valley at 5200 feet. Two (2) main canyons cut this CWMU as it climbs to James Peak at about 9400 feet, Wolf Creek on the south and part of Broadmouth Canyon on the north. The ridge that runs between these two canyon ranges from 7400 feet to the 9400 feet already mentioned. The northern part of the Unit slopes north to 6200 feet. The most common elevation is 6500 feet but ranges from 5200 feet to 9400 feet with an elevation difference of 4200 feet. Fifty-two percent (52%) of the CWMU elevation ranges between 6500 feet and 8000 feet an elevation difference of 1500 feet.
The general aspect of the Broadmouth-Moose Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) is Inter-Mountain Basins Montane Sagebrush Steppe (62) mixed with Rocky Mountain Aspen Forest and Woodland (22). Rocky Mountain Subalpine Mesic Meadow (70) also adds to the general character. There is plenty of Rocky Mountain Gambel Oak-Mixed Montane Shrubland (41). Rocky Mountain Bigtooth Maple Ravine Woodland (23), Inter-Mountain West Aspen-Mixed Conifer Forest and Woodland Complex (38), Rocky Mountain Montane Dry-Mesic Mixed Conifer Forest and Woodland (30), Rocky Mountain Subalpine Mesic Spruce-Fir Forest and Woodland (28), Rocky Mountain Montane Mesic Mixed Conifer Forest and Woodland (32), and Rocky Mountain Subalpine Dry-Mesic Spruce-fir Forest and Woodland (26) all add to this heavily forested Unit in varying proportions. Southern Rocky Mountain Montane-Subalpine Grassland provides a limited grassland perspective, and Rocky Mountain Cliff and Canyon (5) provides an aspect without vegetation.
