The Utah Division of Wildlife is planning to transplant California quail (valley quail) from urban areas to state Wildlife Management Areas and other publicly accessible land from November 2015 through March 2016. Volunteers are needed to locate trapping locations, set traps, check traps, and transport quail to division offices or release/pickup locations. The Wasatch Front (Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Tooele Counties) are the working areas for this project.
Quail traps will be provided by the division.
To participate in this project volunteers must provide at least one, preferably two California quail trapping locations in areas not otherwise accessible to hunting, pre-bait trapping locations, and set traps when snow is forecasted.
If interested in this project contact Avery Cook well in advance of when you would plan on trapping. You will need to have traps and bait on hand to take advantage of weather windows (quail are much easier to capture when snow is on the ground). this project is available for Dedicated Hunter service credit.
