Hunter education

Hunter education course registration

Each student must obtain a Hunter Education Registration Certificate for $10.00 — either online or over the counter at participating DWR license agents — before registering for a Hunter Education course.

The course instructor will validate the Registration Certificate, and it becomes your hunting license upon successful completion of the course. This license is valid for applying for permits in the hunt drawings. The Registration Certificate and corresponding license is valid for 365 days from the date of purchase. In order to maximize your hunting opportunity, complete the course soon after purchasing.

Steps for new student:

  1. Obtain a Hunter Education certificate at any DWR office or license agent.
  2. After obtaining the certificate, register for an advertised class with your local hunter education instructor.
  3. Take the certificate to the Hunter Education Instructor the first night of class.
  4. Upon successful completion of the course, the instructor will provide the validated basic hunting license to the student.
  5. The Hunter Education card, commonly known as the "blue card," will be mailed to the student at the address provided on the certificate.

Remember:

  • Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult while hunting.
  • Regardless of when the student graduates, all hunting regulations such as season dates and bag limits will apply.
  • Students anticipating hunting out-of-state should allow enough time for the "blue card" to arrive in the mail.

Additional information may be obtained by contacting any Division of Wildlife Office or by calling (801) 538-4727.
