Hardware Ranch

Proposed Hardware Ranch WMA Management Plan

In 1945, the State of Utah purchased Hardware Ranch. Today, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) oversees the 14,000-acre wildlife management area (WMA), which provides critical big game winter range for deer, moose and elk.

Because the ranch is an important part of the Cache Valley community and draws visitors from across the state. We have previously collected and considered public to comment on the management plan draft. Further comments to the plan may be made in person at the DWR Northern Region RAC meeting on December 14.

View frequently asked questions

Why have we developed a management plan for Hardware Ranch?

Hardware Ranch is one of more than 100 Utah WMAs. Together, they comprise over 400,000 acres of land dedicated to public access, habitat preservation and promoting wildlife and other natural resources. While they share many characteristics, each WMA remains unique. Hardware Ranch is one of the most active and visible WMAs in the state — it receives more than 70,000 visitors each year. With this many visitors, there are increasing demands on Hardware Ranch and its resources. To attempt to balance those demands with the mission of Hardware Ranch, the DWR has drafted a comprehensive management plan.

What is happening to Rock Creek?

The project to protect about two miles of a popular stretch of Rock Creek on the Hardware Ranch WMA has prompted questions from the public. For answers to common questions, please read our Rock Creek FAQ.

Will the planning process affect hunting, fishing or other recreational access at Hardware Ranch?

Hunting, fishing and general recreation are important activities at Hardware Ranch. One objective is to identify goals and management techniques for both habitat improvement and recreation that are complementary. Although there will not be any closures to general access, there will be some areas where access will be restricted for habitat restoration.
