Mentored youth waterfowl hunt

Apply by July 21 to participate in the Sept. 23 mentored hunt.

Application form

On Sept. 23, we'll hold the mentored Youth Waterfowl Hunt to give kids a chance to hunt waterfowl with highly experienced hunters. The annual event is held in conjunction with Widow Maker Boats, the Utah Conservation Officers Association and Wasatch Wigeons.

This event is designed for kids who are interested in waterfowl hunting, but don’t friends or family members who can help them hunt waterfowl.

All hunts will be on a mud boat, air boat or a private duck club. Most of the hunts will be held on Sept. 23, but a few will be held during the general waterfowl season.

The hunt is open to kids who:

  • As of Sept. 23, 2017, are between the ages of 12 and 15
  • Are not related to any Division of Wildlife Resources employee
  • Are able to attend the mandatory shotgun course (described below)
  • Have never hunted an animal that requires a license
    • If you've hunted, you can still apply if you've never hunted waterfowl and don’t have friends or family that are waterfowl hunters
  • Have not been selected for this hunt before

Note: If anything in your application doesn't match up with above requirements, you may not participate in this event.

If you want to participate, you must complete the application by July 21. We will select and notify the winners by July 26. Not everyone who fills out the questionnaire will be able to participate in the youth hunt. So you will not be required to purchase or borrow any equipment listed on this questionnaire unless you're selected for the hunt.

For safety reasons, if you're selected for the hunt, you'll be required to attend a free shotgun course at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5 at Lee Kay Shooting Center. If you don't have a shotgun, we can provide one for this course. However, we highly encourage you to practice with the gun you intend to hunt with. We will also provide clay pigeons. Remember: you cannot participate in the hunt if you don't attend the shotgun course.

You must also complete a Utah Hunter Education course or enroll in the Trial Hunting Program prior to the hunt on Sept. 23.

In addition to the mentored youth hunt, the Utah Youth Fair will be held at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area on Sept. 9 from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be free giveaways (duck calls, decoys, boat rides, etc). Learn more about the Utah Youth Fair at UtahWaterFowlFair.com.

Remember: Kids under age 12 and kids that are not selected for the Mentored Youth Waterfowl Hunt can still participate in the statewide youth waterfowl hunt.

If you meet the above requirements and want to apply, just fill out the form on the next page.
