Seed Inventory | Seed Warehouse

Seed Resources

The Division, over the years, has developed a very valuable seed acquisition, storage, mixing and distribution program. When the Division became involved in habitat improvement, it readily became apparent that seed collection, cleaning techniques and equipment had to be developed and that a seed inventory was mandatory. A seed inventory is necessary for the following reasons;

  1. The most ideal time to seed is generally short and dictated by fall and early winter weather. Seed has to be available when the windows for seeding are presented.
  2. Most wildland species do not produce seed every year; some only produce seed once in five to eight years. Seed has to be obtained when available.
  3. Fluctuations in commercial seed availability and prices can be avoided through maintaining a seed inventory
  4. It is difficult to predict seed needs, especially on co-op projects with private landowners and other agencies where programs and finances change and shift rapidly; and because of rapid and severe changes in weather conditions or wild and prescribed fire.

A major reason for the Division's very successful habitat improvement program is the ability to warehouse seed, thus having the appropriate seed available when needed. The seed program is essential for the Division to participate in co-op projects with ranchers, farmers, and various government agencies.
