Poacher sentenced for trophy buck deer killing near Monticello

SAN JUAN COUNTY — Utah resident, John Mogle, poached a trophy buck deer outside the boundary of the Spring Creek/Dodge Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU) in the fall of 2010. He had a permit to hunt the CWMU, but after several unsuccessful attempts to harvest the buck, the animal was eventually killed off the unit.

The incident was filmed and televised as part of an outdoors television series.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officers investigating the incident obtained a search warrant and confiscated the deer head, rifle and all video pertaining to the incident. All members of the party were charged and successfully prosecuted in San Juan County for their involvement in the poaching violation.

John Mogle has pleaded guilty to Wanton Destruction of Protected Wildlife, a class A misdemeanor, and was ordered to pay $1,883 in fines and $6,117 in restitution. His sentence also includes probation and time in jail. Mogle faces a potential 10-year suspension of his hunting privileges.

Tony Chavira, a Spring Creek/Dodge CWMU guide, pleaded guilty to a class A misdemeanor count of Wanton Destruction of Protected Wildlife. He was assessed $1,033 in fines, placed on probation for 24 months and had his big game license privileges suspended for eight years.

Javalan Redd filmed the incident. He has pleaded guilty to class B misdemeanor count of Wanton Destruction of Protected Wildlife. He was assessed $783 in fines, placed on probation for one year and had his big game license privileges suspended for two years.

Joshua Behling participated in an effort to push the buck from the trees and subsequently helped move the animal carcass back onto the unit. He has pleaded guilty to a class B misdemeanor count of Unlawful Taking of Protected Wildlife. He was assessed $603 in fines and placed on probation for one year.

Courtney Crane participated in an effort to push the buck from the trees and subsequently helped move the animal carcass back on to the unit. He has pleaded guilty to a class B misdemeanor count of Unlawful Taking of Protected Wildlife. He was assessed $533 in fines and placed on probation for one year.

Kasey Petersen participated in an effort to push the buck from the trees and subsequently helped move the animal carcass back on to the unit. He has pleaded guilty to a class B misdemeanor count of Unlawful Taking of Protected Wildlife. He was assessed $603 in fines and was placed on probation for one year.
