Permits on sale Oct. 9, 2012

If you want to participate in this fall's rifle buck deer hunt—but you don't have a permit yet—wildlife officials have some great news: More than 1,300 permits are still available to hunt in northern Utah.

The permits go on sale Oct. 9 on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting at 8 a.m., you can get a permit at wildlife.utah.gov, from more than 300 license agents across Utah and at DWR offices.

On Oct. 4, the last day of Utah's muzzleloader deer hunt, the following permits were available for the following units:

Two of the units—the Box Elder and the Cache—are large areas in northern Utah. Both areas provide plenty of hunting opportunity and have lots of public land.

Most of the Chalk Creek/East Canyon/Morgan-South Rich unit is private property. Written permission from landowners is required to hunt on private land on the unit.

Weren't all of the rifle permits taken earlier this year?

The rifle permits that will be available on Oct. 9 were originally archery and muzzleloader permits that archery and muzzleloader hunters didn't take.

"These permits will become rifle permits on Oct. 9," says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "We're excited to give rifle hunters, who didn't get a permit earlier this year, a chance to get out and hunt."
