If you live in an area that has mule deer in or near it, cougars may be in the area too. John Shivik, mammals coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says deer are the main animal cougars prey on, especially in the winter.

Even though it's part of nature, watching deer struggle through deep snow — trying to find something to eat — can be tough to watch. As snow starts to fall in Utah, however, Division of Wildlife Resources biologists are issuing a plea: Don't feed the deer.

On Dec. 6, members of the Utah Wildlife Board approved an unlimited number of special youth archery permits. If they've passed Hunter Education and have a bow and arrow, hunters 18 years old and younger are guaranteed a chance to hunt buck deer in Utah next fall.
