The Wetlands Learning Center at the GSL Nature Center

DO YOU KNOW how big Lake Bonneville was, or how many bald eagles spend their winters at the Great Salt Lake? There's no limit to the wonders of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem! Visit the exhibit room and learning center at the nature center to learn the answers to these questions, and so much more.

The learning center is full of hands-on opportunities for kids and their grownups. Activities include:

• examining macroinvertebrates (tiny, strange-looking pond creatures),
• using a dichotomous key to help identify organisms,
• making animal tracks in sand to become a better tracker,
• getting an up-close look at oolitic sand of the Great Salt Lake,
• examining skulls and touching pelts of mammals that live around the wetlands and
• viewing nests and eggs from a variety of birds.

The Wetlands Learning Center is also home to an aquarium full of Great Salt Lake brine shrimp, a collection of wildlife and wetland books, a live garter snake, a couple of Utah tiger salamanders and chorus frogs.

Just steps away, you'll find the nature center's bird exhibit room. Get an up-close look at a variety of mounted birds including a bald eagle, tundra swan, owls and duck and goose species.

In the mood to sit and relax? Enjoy the view of the birds feeding in the wetlands just south of the learning center and exhibit room. There's a great deck with benches and spotting scopes for the public to use.

Currently the learning center is not open on weekends. You can change this by volunteering to host the nature center on weekends.
