Meet the Bats Night - Southeastern Region

From Saturday, July 21, 2012 -  20:00
To Sunday, July 22, 2012 - 01:00
During the night of Saturday, July 21, the Division of Wildlife Resources will host a bat watch in southeastern Utah. The event is free and the public is heartily invited. The viewing location is adjacent to the Colorado River and about 45 miles up-river from Moab. Travel time from Salt Lake City is five hours and from Price is three hours. Participants will meet at the Rio Mesa research facility around 8 p.m. Bat viewing will begin at dark and will continue until 1:00 a.m., although participants may leave before that time. Tent camping sites may be reserved for those wishing to stay overnight.

Just before dark, biologists will erect mist nets across a wetland, where bats will be trapped while they hunt insects. Once trapped, the bats will be removed from the net and biological measurements will be taken. At this point, the public can observe the bats in-hand. As many as five different bat species may be observed. These include the canyon bat, pallid bat, California myotis, silver-haired bat and hoary bat. Each species will often appear at different hours of the night. Participants who stay 2-3 hours will have a much better chance of seeing the most species.

Pre-registration is required by calling Brent Stettler at 435-613-3707 or 435-636-6731. Additional information and instructions will be provided at the time of pre-registration. Read this news release for more information.
