Dedicated Hunter program

Southern Region Dedicated Hunter work projects

Dedicated Hunters may participate in projects in any region. Please check the other region listings for projects that might interest you.

Projects must be at least half full or the project may be cancelled. Please sign up early.

NOVEMBER

Depredation fence removal
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help remove depredation fencing around a protected agriculture field
  • Location: Paragonah (in Iron County)
  • Date: Nov. 5
  • Hours available: 4
  • Volunteers needed: 4
  • Special requirements: Long pants, gloves and fencing pliers

Willow cutting
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help cut willows that will be planted along the Virgin River.
  • Location: Washington County
  • Date: Nov. 7
  • Hours available: 6–8
  • Volunteers needed: 20
  • Special requirements: Gloves and warm clothes (You may get wet.)

Edwards Spring seeding
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help with seeding efforts (please call for details).
  • Location: Iron County
  • Dates: Nov. 10, 12 and 13
  • Hours available: Eight
  • Volunteers needed: Five
  • Special requirements: Gloves, boots and warm clothes

Willow planting
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help plant willows along the Virgin River.
  • Location: Washington County
  • Date: Nov. 14
  • Hours available: 6–8
  • Volunteers needed: 20
  • Special requirements: Gloves and warm clothes (You may get wet.)

Buckskin Mountain water project
  • Description: We need volunteers to haul water and fill tanks on the Buckskin winter range for wildlife use.
  • Location: Buckskin Mountain (Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Kane County)
  • Date: November 2009
  • Volunteers needed: Call for details
  • Hours available: Dedicated Hunters will receive 4 hours for each delivery of 300 gallons or more of water hauled to the tanks. For every 50 gallons under 300 gallons hauled, 30 minutes will be subtracted from the 4 hours (as long as the delivery is at least 200 gallons). For example, 250 gallons of water hauled will equal 3.5 hours, and 200 gallons will equal 3 hours. No dedicated hunter hours will be awarded for deliveries of less than 200 gallons. Volunteer effort for other work associated with this project (moving tanks, other construction) may be eligible for dedicated hunter credit if you obtain prior approval from Blaine Cox. All work performed on this approved project must be in accordance with project guidelines (call for details).
  • Special requirements: Long pants, gloves, boots, a 4X4 truck, good driving skills, knowledge of the Buckskin Mountain area

Refinish and recarpet floor speakers
  • Description: We need volunteers to refinish and recarpet four floor speakers (call contact for details).
  • Location: DWR office in Cedar City
  • Date: November 2009–January 2010
  • Volunteers needed: 1–2
  • Hours available: Up to 8+ hours per volunteer
  • Special requirements: Purchase new carpeting, glue and other necessary materials and also have the tools needed to refinish the speakers (call for details).

Office move
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help move the DWR's field office to the new Division office building in Washington County.
  • Location: Washington County
  • Date: November (day to be determined)
  • Hours available: 8
  • Volunteers needed: 20
  • Special requirements: Heavy lifting, gloves and long pants. We also need pickup trucks, trailers and any additional moving equipment. (Contact Blaine Cox for more details.)

Build shelving
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to construct new built-in shelving for the new Washington County Division of Wildlife Resources office.
  • Location: Washington County
  • Date: November (until completed)

  • Special requirements: Carpentry skills, carpentry tools (Contact Blaine Cox for more details.)

Outhouse/toliet construction on WMA
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to construct a toilet/outhouse for a DWR wildlife management area (WMA).
  • Location: Southern Utah
  • Hours available: To be determined
  • Special requirements: Experience in construction, ability to read construction plans, tools and materials (contact Blaine Cox for more specific details and plans).

DECEMBER

Pronghorn trap preparation
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help set up the pronghorn trap.
  • Location: Loa (in Wayne County)
  • Date: Dec. 2
  • Hours available: 10+ (You might receive hours for travel, if you contact Blaine Cox and get your request preapproved.)
  • Volunteers needed: 20 or more
  • Special requirements: Gloves, boots, warm clothes and a 4x4 vehicle

Pronghorn trapping
  • Description: We need dedicated hunters to help Division employees trap pronghorn. (This is a popular project for dedicated hunters. Please contact Blaine early to reserve your spot.)
  • Location: Loa (in Wayne County)
  • Date: Dec. 9–10
  • Hours available: 10+ (You might receive hours for travel, if you contact Blaine Cox and get your request preapproved.)
  • Volunteers needed: 20 (Volunteers for this project must be preapproved by Blaine Cox at least one week in advance—no exceptions.)
  • Special requirements: Gloves, boots, warm clothes and a 4x4 vehicle. Lunch will be provided.

MISCELLANEOUS

Clean and maintain fishing pond
  • Description: We need volunteers to help clean and maintain an urban fishing pond (pick up trash, remove old fishing line, etc.).
  • Dates: 2009–2010

  • Hours available: 2 hours per visit
  • Special requirements: Gloves

Taxidermy work
  • Description: At times our law enforcement section has a need to have a taxidermist skin an animal. To get your name on a list to be called for these opportunities give us a call.

Hide, skull donations
  • Description: Project WILD, a DWR education program, needs donated hides and skulls of various Utah species for wildlife education trunks. The program needs hides and skulls of a variety of large and small mammals. Specifically, we would like to have a black bear hide, the skull of an antlerless moose and pelts from mountain cottontail rabbits, striped skunks, raccoons, muskrats, red squirrels and yellow-bellied marmots. The program also needs taxidermy services for the green hides and skulls received.
  • Special requirements: Prefer pelts with all feet, claws and head (ears turned is best)
  • Hours: The value in service hours will based upon fair market value of the product or service rendered at a rate of $20 per service hour.

Projects other than those on this list must be approved by Blaine Cox.

Projects may be added to this list to fill in weekends that are not scheduled, and some weekends may be scheduled with more than one project. Do not procrastinate; sign up early for the project that fits your schedule.

  • All service projects must be previously approved by the DWR before they will be accepted.
  • Education meeting and Certificate of Registration must be completed before a Dedicated Hunter can complete the service hours or attend a RAC for credit
  • Hours begin at the job site when you begin the project.
  • You must provide your own refreshments or lunch.
  • No alcoholic beverages will be permitted.
