Dedicated Hunter program

Participation in the Dedicated Hunter program involves meeting deadlines and fulfilling mandatory program requirements. This requires advanced planning, personal time and commitment; so the program may not be right for everyone. Before receiving a permit each year, participants must have a valid hunting license and complete program requirements in the following order:

If you enrolled in 2007 or 2008...

Permit 1: You must perform a minimum of 8 service hours.
Permit 2: You must complete a minimum of 16 service hours, for a total of 24 service hours. You must also complete the online Wildlife Conservation and Ethics course.
Permit 3: You do not need to meet any additional requirements, but you must not be at your harvest limit.

Residents may purchase no more than 16 of the 24 required service hours, and nonresidents may purchase all 24 hours.

If you enrolled in 2009...

Year 1: You must perform a minimum of 16 service hours and complete the online Wildlife Conservation and Ethics course.
Year 2: You must perform a minimum of 16 service hours, for a total of 32 service hours (year 1 + year 2).
Year 3: You must perform a minimum of eight service hours, for a total of 40 service hours (year 1 + year 2 + year 3).

Residents may purchase no more than 30 of the 40 required service hours, and nonresidents may purchase all 40 hours.

NOTE: We strongly encourage participants to read the Dedicated Hunter Rule each year to remain up to date on any changes.

Requirement details

  • Participants are expected to complete their own service hours. Under no circumstances can anyone perform service hours for someone else.
  • Hours are nontransferable from person to person.
  • Participants who are unable to fulfill all of the service hour requirements may purchase service hours at the currently hourly service buyout rate (2009 rate: $20/hr).
  • At the discretion of the DWR, goods and/or services may be substituted for service hours based upon current market values for the goods and/or services. Credit shall be applied by using the approved hourly service buyout rate.
  • Service hours completed in any given year may be carried over to subsequent years, but excess hours may not be carried over to any year outside of the three-year enrollment period. There are no exceptions or alternative options for completing the online wildlife conservation and ethics course.
  • Participants must complete all requirements by October 1 in their third year to qualify for a loyalty point. Loyalty points are only valid through the following year's enrollment period. See the Dedicated Hunter Rule for more details
