Dedicated Hunter program

Central Region Dedicated Hunter work projects

Current projects: Northern | Central | Northeastern | Southeastern | Southern | Salt Lake

Dedicated Hunters may participate in projects in any region. Please check the other region listings for projects that might interest you.

   — Drive time is only issued when pre-approved.
   — The DWR must pre-approve all service projects.
   — Participants must complete service hours before the DWR will issue a permit.
   — Participants must provide their own food and water, unless otherwise noted.

If you sign up for a project, we expect you there. If you can't make it, please let us know ASAP.


NOTE: The Northeastern Region has several important projects needing volunteers; please consider them. Credit for hours spent traveling is negotiable.

NOVEMBER

Vehicle body work and repaint
  • Description: A 1998 four-horse slant load horse trailer needs minor body work, the lights replaced and to be repainted.
  • Location: The trailer is in Price, but it can be brought to the Wasatch Front for necessary work.
  • Dates: Needed immediately
  • Volunteers needed: 2–3
  • Special requirements: Volunteers should be proficient in minor auto body work, and have access to an auto body shop with the necessary equipment.

Taxidermist
  • Description: We need a taxidermist to assist law enforcement personnel.

CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR PROJECTS

Note: These projects are essential to meet safety codes. If not performed by volunteers, we must pull biologists and conservation officers out of the field to complete the projects or pay contractors to do the work. We also need of materials for these projects (see donations).

Construction of boardwalk
  • Description: The DWR needs dedicated hunters with framing and carpentry skills to help construct 1,300 feet of handicapped-accessible boardwalk.
  • Location: Great Salt Lake Nature Center at Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area
  • Dates: Every Friday and Saturday, beginning Oct. 30 and continuing through Dec. 19 (and any weekday if prior arrangements are made through the contact, Bob Hasenyager)
  • Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or longer, if you want)
  • Hours available: Varies
  • Skills needed: Framing and carpentry
  • Supplies needed: Waterproof boots, electric drill, hammer, nail gun (if you have one), skill saw, warm clothes, lunch and any personal items
  • Volunteers needed: A minimum of four each day. (There is no maximum.)

Install vinyl siding
  • Description: Hang vinyl siding on a building in Lake Shore (West of Spanish Fork). Siding is provided.
  • Time: When available

Repair and maintain marina docks
  • Description: The docks at our marina need some help (small repairs on broken boards and stain on the wood).
  • Equipment: Hand tools (for replacing old broken 2x8 boards), wood treatment/waterproofing stain and tools to apply the stain to the docks.
  • Location: City marina, Harbor Parkway 4000 S. McGreagor Lane (140 E.) in Saratoga Springs

Asphalt patch repair
  • Description: Asphalt donation and patch repair

Sprinkler aluminum handline repair
  • Description: We need help fixing a sprinkler handline. We have the necessary materials.
  • Location: DWR Springville office

Fence settling ponds
  • Description: Settling ponds need to be fenced in using chain link fence. Donated materials will be converted to service time or materials can be provided.

Metal steps
  • Description: We need 16 sets of steps built for our raceways. They should be 36 inches wide, with two 8-inch steps at 7 and 14 inches above the ground. The steps should be made of expanded metal, grating or similar materials. They should be able to support 300 pounds and must be able to sit flush against the raceway walls, which are 22 inches high. The whole unit should be made of aluminum or stainless steel. Credit will be given for both time and cost of materials ($20 = 1 hour).

Concrete foundation
  • Description: Concrete foundation for cattle guards.

Concrete worker
  • Description: We're looking for an individual or group of dedicated hunters with experience forming concrete walls to assist us with constructing some forms to help hold soil in place around some 36-inch irrigation culverts. The project is located west of Spanish Fork, near Utah Lake. The culverts are in in place and the excavation is complete. We're ready to build forms and pour concrete.

  • Description: Glass repair in the DWR housing area.

Welder
  • Description: Welders needed to construct aluminum stiles. A stile is ladder that provides access over a fence. Materials will need to be donated along with labor. Service hours for donated materials will be given.

Plexiglass work
  • Description: We need help with plexiglass for a display case.

Wildlife rehabilitation pens
  • Description: Bear pen needs road-base foundation to be constructed. Mews need to be painted and existing pens need to be repaired. Great group projects. Extra hours given for donating materials and using own equipment.

EQUIPMENT AND OPERATORS

Mini-x with operator who is willing to travel
  • Description: Looking for an operator with his own equipment and 1–2 other people who need hours and are willing to travel to the West Desert for a day job. We have three water-monitoring devices in a stream that we need to remove. It will take longer to drive there than it will to do the job, but it's likely an all-day project because of travel time. DWR employees will assist you.

Backhoe/front-end loader project
  • Description: Help us clear some vegetation in preparation for some fence work.
  • Equipment: Backhoe or front-end loader. More hours will be granted if you provide this equipment.

Beaver trapping
  • Description: We need the assistance of an on-call, experienced beaver trapper.
  • Location: Areas throughout Utah, Wasatch and Salt Lake counties

Landscape help
  • Description: Trees, shrubs and perennials need to be planted. Someone with a power auger would be very helpful. Run drip lines around plants. There are also some items you can donate — such as bark mulch — to complete the landscaping ($20 donation = one hour).

Donations: The materials you donate make a difference. These items are often required to make sure a project is completed correctly, with the right equipment, and according to code or law. When the Division doesn't have to purchase the items, there is more money available to spend on wildlife.

  • Description: A garden dump cart is used to haul educational materials in and out of schools, festivals and other events. You can find one of these at Home Depot. We also need storage containers for educational items. The desired type of container is the "Rubbermaid Action Packer". We're looking for various sizes of 24-, 38- or 8-gallon containers.

Skull donation

  • Description: We would like animal skulls for education purposes. If you want to buy them, www.acornnaturalists.com carries a variety. We are looking specifically for rattlesnake, badger, hummingbird, great blue heron, wild turkey, red-tailed hawk, osprey and raven.

Hide, skull donations
  • Description: Project WILD, a DWR education program, needs donated hides and skulls of various Utah species for wildlife education trunks. The program needs hides and skulls of a variety of large and small mammals. Specifically, we would like to have a black bear hide, the skull of an antlerless moose and pelts from mountain cottontail rabbits, striped skunks, raccoons, muskrats, red squirrels and yellow-bellied marmots. The program also needs taxidermy services for the green hides and skulls received.
  • Special requirements: Prefer pelts with all feet, claws and head (ears turned is best)
  • Hours: The value in service hours will based upon fair market value of the product or service rendered at a rate of $20 per service hour.
