Description
The Cotton Junction CWMU is located on the Goose Creek Mountain near the Utah-Idaho border. Lower elevations are in Junction Valley ranging from 5600 feet in the north to 6200 feet in the south. These elevations rise to the west and attain heights of 8000 feet in the north and 6800 feet in the south. Basin Creek cuts the Unit about midway. It ranges from 6000 feet to 8600 feet. Short, Long and South Creeks (6000 feet to 7800 feet) cut the north part of the Unit. Quaking Aspen Creek, Little Pole Creek and First Creek (5800 feet to 6400 feet) cut the Unit in the south. The most common elevation is 6700 feet but ranges from 5700 feet to 8600 feet with an elevation difference of 2900 feet. Fifty-five percent (55%) of the CWMU elevation ranges between 6500 feet and 7800 feet an elevation difference of 1300 feet.

Most of the Cotton Junction Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (CWMU), over seventy-five (75%), is covered with either Inter-Mountain Basins Montane Sagebrush Steppe (62) or Inter-Mountain Basins Big Sagebrush Shrubland (48). Four (4) other land cover types contribute almost equal amounts to the total land cover of the Unit, Great Basin Foothill and Lower Montane Riparian Woodland and Shrubland (98), Great Basin Pinyon-Juniper Woodland (37), Agriculture (114), and Rocky Mountain Aspen Forest and Woodland (22).

One of the Cotton Junction Cooperative Wildlife Mangement Unit (CWMU) nearest weather stations, GROUSE CREEK (423486), is about 9.3 km north from the north edge of the CWMU. GROUSE CREEK has FORTH-NINE (49) years of records, 1959 - 2008. During the FALL (September, October and November) the average precipitation is 2.25 inches, but it can be as high as 4.42 inches or as low as 0.60 inch. During the 91-day FALL period, 16 days will experience greater than or equal to 0.01 inch of precipitation, 7 days of greater than or equal to 0.10 inch, or 1 day of the greater than or equal to 0.50 inch of precipitation. Snowfall during the FALL averages 3.6 inches but can be as high as 21.0 inches. FALL temperature at GROUSE CREEK averages 46.0 degrees F. but can be as high as 97.0 degrees F. or as low as -12.0 degrees F. During the FALL, 54 days will be below freezing (32 degrees F.) and 1 day above 90 degrees F.
