Great Salt Lake aerial swan survey

Starting in 2018, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will no longer conduct aerial swan surveys at the Great Salt Lake. Because swan migration is very consistent over time, swan hunters can anticipate that swans will be in the same locations during the same time period from year to year.

The data below shows swan migration patterns over the last 60 years. Swan migration has varied very little from year to year. Most swans show up in Utah around the first of November and stay until the first hard freeze. The Bear River Refuge and surrounding marshes are where most swans stop on their migration.

Bear River Refuge 45.30%
Clubs near Bear River Refuge 38.10%
South shore clubs 7.20%
Willard Spur 3.70%
Public Shooting Grounds WMA 3.00%
Ogden Bay/Howard Slough WMA 1.50%
Harold Crane WMA 0.90%
Farmington Bay WMA 0.30%
Layton-Kaysville marsh 0.0%
